Books & Brews: "Kent State" by John Backderf
Join us for the next gathering of Books & Brews, our laid-back neighborhood book club where good conversation meets a good drink.
This month we’ll be discussing Kent State — the powerful and deeply researched graphic novel that revisits the tragic events of May 4, 1970, when the Ohio National Guard opened fire on students protesting the Vietnam War at Kent State University. Backderf, an Ohio native and award-winning cartoonist, brings the story to life with remarkable care, capturing the tension, confusion, and humanity of the moment from multiple perspectives.
Books & Brews is always a welcoming, low-pressure conversation—no lectures, no homework vibes, just thoughtful discussion around the table with a room full of curious people.
And if books aren’t your thing, that’s alright too. The bar will be open and doing its usual Thursday night thing, so you can still swing by for a cocktail and the company.
Come grab a drink, pull up a chair, and join the conversation.

Live Music: Ben Gage
Join us for an evening with Ben Gage, live at Speak of the Devil.
Ben Gage is a songwriter out of Akron, Ohio, blending folk guitar and blues harmonica into a warm, easygoing Americana sound. A few years ago he traded a corporate career for the road, and since 2021 he’s been touring across the U.S., Canada, and Europe, building a life around music, travel, and a lot more fresh air.
His songs pull from the places he’s wandered and the people he’s met along the way—road-earned stories delivered with a sense of humor and a love for the simple things.
On stage, Ben has a way of making the room feel smaller in the best possible way. He invites everyone to settle in like neighbors, listen together, and maybe remember not to take life quite so seriously for a little while.
It should be a perfect night of music for the room. Come early, grab a drink, and stay awhile.

SAW - The Musical
The horror love story you didn't know you wanted!
SAW The Musical: The Unauthorized Parody of Saw premieres Off-Broadway Fall 2023 in New York after its smash out-of-town tryout in Philadelphia last year! One of the most thought-provoking horror films of all time now is…a musical. SAW The Musical hilariously captures the events of the first movie, parodying the Saw that started it all, following from where Lawrence Gordon and Adam Stanheight find each other for the first time in the bathroom trap. Will they follow "the rules" as they discover each other's secrets? Will they escape the game in time and saw right through? A love story with fluidity (and lots more fluids), SAW The Musical: The Unauthorized Parody of Saw is Little Shop of Horrors meets Avenue Q, pushing the boundary on sexuality and how to love.

Zoso: The Ultimate Led Zeppelin Experience
Zoso: The Ultimate Led Zeppelin Experience
Celebrating 31 years of touring in 2026, Zoso has become one of the most iconic and respected Led Zeppelin tribute experiences in the world, having played over 4,900 shows in all 50 states and internationally. Known for their unparalleled dedication to faithfully recreating the legendary band's live performances, Zoso has earned accolades from both critics and fans alike.
Zoso’s live performances focus on the raw energy and intricate musicality of Led Zeppelin’s best-known hits and deeper tracks, with a particular emphasis on recreating their live show experience. The band’s commitment to authenticity has earned them praise from major outlets, with the LA Times calling them “head and shoulders above all other Led Zeppelin tributes,” and the St. Petersburg Times describing them as “the most exacting of all the Led Zeppelin tributes.”
The band was founded in 1995 by Matt Jernigan and Adam Sandling, both of whom are renowned for their exceptional musicianship and passion for Led Zeppelin's music. Jernigan, who takes on the colossal role of Robert Plant, has a commanding stage presence that rivals the icon himself. Sandling, who brings John Paul Jones to life, masterfully plays bass, keyboards, and mandolin, replicating the multifaceted talent of the Zeppelin legend.
In 2015, Bevan Davies joined Zoso on drums to master the part of John Bonham. An accomplished touring and studio drummer with a resume that includes playing with such artists as Danzig, Jerry Cantrell (of Alice in Chains), and Static X and many more. Davies brings an unmistakable power and precision to Zoso’s live shows, helping the band recreate Bonham’s legendary drum sound. His performance of Bonham’s legendary Moby Dick is something to behold.
In 2025, at the age of 24, Holston Rainero joined the band, taking on the monumental guitar role of Jimmy Page. A fan of Zoso, Rainero didn’t let an opportunity slip away when he learned of an opening in the band’s lineup. His story read like something straight out of a movie script; Rainero reached out directly to the band through social media to request an audition. While dozens of musicians had already contacted the band with no success, Rainero’s determination set him apart.
Refusing to take no for an answer, he began uploading videos of himself playing classic songs from the band in his bedroom. It didn’t take long for the band to recognize his extraordinary talent. His playing was not just skilled, it was a truly inspired performance, with the technical mastery and soul that made it clear he was something special.
The band immediately got him to Atlanta for an in-person audition. Rainero, ever ready, arrived with his bags packed, knowing he was prepared to seize the moment. His live audition exceeded all expectations, and within days, he was on tour with the band, stepping into one of rock history’s most iconic roles.

Heaven Hill 90th Anniversary Bourbon & Grain to Glass Tasting
Some bottles arrive with a lot of noise. Others slip quietly onto the shelf… and the people who know, know.
Join us at Speak of the Devil for a special tasting celebrating Heaven Hill’s 90th Anniversary Bourbon alongside pours from their fascinating Grain to Glass series.
The Heaven Hill 90th Anniversary Bourbon is easily one of 2025’s sleeper releases. It didn’t make a huge splash when it dropped, but those who opened a bottle know just how good it is. A classic Kentucky bourbon at heart, beautifully balanced with sweet notes, warming spice, and layers of oak that make for a surprisingly rich sip.
We’ll explore it alongside selections from the Grain to Glass series, diving into how grain and mashbill shape the final whiskey in the glass.
Our friends from Edacious Kitchen & Bar will be providing some great eats for the evening, and Heaven Hill has sent along a few gifts for guests attending the tasting.
Tickets are limited and $100 each, so grab your seat while they last. If you love great bourbon, this is a night you won’t want to miss.
INBOX US on Facebook or talk to your bartender or server to reserve your seat!

Drifters, Coasters, & Platters
Thirty years ago the entertainment manager at the Tropicana Hotel in Atlantic City had what he thought was a very good idea. It was a time of Boy Bands, Hair Bands & Hip Hop. He decided that he was going to take 3 of the most popular touring bands from early Rock & Roll (the Drifters, Coasters & Platters) and combine them into a package that could compete with the major acts that frequently played in the Tropicana’s massive showroom. Cher played that very room in those days, as did Elton John and Santana.
The above, mentioned groups had already been touring, successfully, for many years. with an established fan base, but at basically midsized clubs throughout the country. “Synergy” said, Bobby Ross (the Tropicana’s fabled entertainment director). “These groups represent synergy – the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”. Place the 3 of them together and they represent the vast expanse that is the joy of early Rock & Roll.
The Drifters created the pre-Motown, heavily choreographed slickness, of Urban Pop-Soul. The Coasters (soon to become the Cornell Gunter Coasters – named after their founding member) were the premier, and perhaps the only, group combining gritty R&B with night club comedy antics. The Platters – well so much music, even then, was about love and romance (especially that of the young & unrequited variety) and that is what the Platters were all about.
The three-act package had played the country before, but Bobby Ross did something quite exceptional. He had their managers combine them into one, seamless show where their interplay put the focus on the big picture of the presentation rather than three separate concerts. And, most importantly, he booked them for an extended, six-week run.
“These groups are great alone”, Ross said at the time, “make sure we have a package where the three of them perform as one and make it a party – not a show.” Bobby noted the overwhelming numbers of Atlantic City visitors. “Word of mouth governs in this town. We’ll let some high-rollers in for free first, and if the show is what I think it will be by the second week it will be selling out.”
In a way, the very far-sighted and creative Bobby Ross was wrong. By the 4th night the show was selling out. And it continued to sell out. Not for just the original six-week run but for three, six-week run every year for the next five years.
And then, it was on to Las Vegas. Nine months per year in Vegas at the famed Sahara Hotel, where the Beatles and Sinatra got their starts, three months on the road (with just a few stops to kiss the family hello and good-by). Those were heady times for the three groups together. They went one to present the longest running concert show in Las Vegas history – under Producers Bill Caron and Larry Marshak (who has and still does manage several of the acts over the years).
Membership in the three groups has evolved over the years as time has passed but the Drifters, the Cornell Gunter Coasters and the Platters still stick with their original strategy of combining long term veterans with fresh new faces from time to time. So, even at this late date, after nearly fifty years as one of the top selling road shows in the country, half of the members from the three groups date back to having performed with original members on the original recordings.
In a two-page, centerpiece spread, in the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s weekend entertainment magazine, the Entertainment Editor noted, “this strategy of rotating veterans with rookies to form an on ongoing and cohesive line-up, has allowed the groups to make creative personnel changes over the years while still conforming to their original aura”. The senior most member of the three groups. Jerome Jackson, who worked with the Drifters going back to the days of Ben E. King (over thirty years ago) had this to say about the concept: “It works, we still get all of our old fans plus at each show we see a whole new fanbase of young people discovering our music for the first time. These groups have a tremendous historical
legacy, which I am so proud to be a part of, and we aren’t doing anything to change it”, Jerome said, as he made his way to sign autographs for two teenage fans and their mother.
